Response: Journeys
One of the motifs in this film was proximity. The amount of space in India is limited and every millimeter should be cherished is what this film screamed to me. I also got the idea of people rushing and stressing about time in this film. There were tow types of people riding the train those that seemed in a hurry and stressed and these that seem relaxed and not worried, even thought both were seemed to be dressed in work attire. The relaxed people were just enjoying the ride; they mostly consisted of the people riding on top of the train. They were taking it all in. Those inside the train felt the proximity problem, people so close up on them, sweating, they were probably already late to their engagements. The film to me focused around these motifs. A secondary theme could be how unsafe a train ride can be in India as the director zoomed in on the death of 13 riders by fault of the railroad system. The film was nicely made and reminded me of how valuable space can be and is. I witnessed this first hand in my experience in China while riding public transportation, the weak will not survive when it comes to taking your own space, you have to fight for every millimeter.
